Monverde organises guided tours throughout the Vinho Verde region — one of the world's most diverse and versatile, producing wines that range from light and fresh to mineral, complex, and structured. Begin at the Quinta da Lixa winery and vinification centre, where the wines that grace the hotel's list are born — a visit that reveals the invisible work behind every drop. Then explore the region's small producers: Adega Sem Igual (100Igual), with its irreverence and authenticity; Caves da Cerca, where tradition remains very much alive; Quinta de Maderne, with its century-old vines; or Casa de Cello, set on a 40-hectare estate just minutes from Amarante. These boutique wineries tell the most intimate, human story of Vale do Sousa. End with lunch at a typical regional taberna.
Tâmega Greenway: Cycling Through Vines
For those who prefer to discover the landscape by bicycle, the Tâmega Greenway follows 35 km of the old railway line that closed in 1990. The paved cycle path crosses lush vineyard and forest scenery between Amarante and Arco de Baúlhe, with old stations transformed into cafés and rest stops. A slow, sublime way to feel the valley.
Vale do Sousa — a Land of Granite and Schist
The Vale do Sousa sub-region encompasses the municipalities of Penafiel, Felgueiras, Paços de Ferreira, Lousada, Castelo de Paiva, and part of Amarante. It is a land of granite soils, rivers winding between mountains, and estates producing uniquely characterful Vinho Verde — with vibrant acidity, floral notes, and a minerality that reflects the stony terroir. The Romanesque Route cuts through this sub-region with 58 medieval monuments — churches, monasteries, bridges, and castles that tell a thousand years of Portuguese history.
Amarante:
City of Love and Art
Bridge and Church of São Gonçalo
Begin with Amarante's greatest icon: the Ponte de São Gonçalo, a National Monument that spans the Tâmega River. Its history stretches back to the Middle Ages, and in 1809 it was the stage for the heroic Defence of Amarante, which held out against Napoleon's troops for 14 days. Beside it stands the Church of São Gonçalo, built by order of King João III in 1540, with an exuberant baroque interior — gilded woodwork, azulejo tiles, and the tomb of the city's patron. São Gonçalo is, delightfully, the patron saint of matchmaking: it is to him that unmarried women turn in search of love.
Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso Museum
Housed within the Convent of São Gonçalo, this museum is a mandatory stop. Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso (1887–1918) was one of Portugal's greatest painters and a pioneer of the European avant-garde. The museum holds an impressive collection of his works, alongside pieces by António Carneiro and Acácio Lino. A monument to Amarante's creativity and genius.
Traditional Boat on the River
To discover Amarante from the perspective of the water, board a guiga — the city's traditional boat — on the Tâmega River. Glide beneath the old bridge, admire the historic buildings leaning over the banks, and make your way towards the old mill and waterfalls. Rides are available between June and October (Guigas Serralharia Aguiar, Cais do Tâmega). A memory of water and stone to carry home.
Amarante's Convent Sweets
No visit to Amarante is complete without a stop for convent pastries. At Confeitaria da Ponte or Tinoca, try the lérias, foguetes, brisas do Tâmega, and the famous "São Gonçalos" — the phallic sweet that, legend has it, traces its origins to Roman fertility rituals and is today the city's most irreverent emblem. Take a box home as a souvenir.
Romanesque Route · Vale do Sousa
For lovers of history and medieval architecture, the Romanesque Route passes through Amarante and crosses Vale do Sousa with ten Romanesque monuments, including three monasteries (such as the impressive Mosteiro do Salvador in Travanca), six churches, and a bridge.
